What a co-packer actually does
A co-packer (contract packager) takes your recipe and produces, packages, and often ships finished product on their lines. For most emerging food and beverage brands, working with a co-packer is the fastest path from a farmers-market kitchen to retail-ready volume — without buying a facility of your own.
The problem isn't finding a co-packer. It's finding one that runs your category, at your volume, with the certifications your buyers require, and that you can verify before you wire a deposit.
"We made a costly choice that left us with a failed production run, unexpected inventory, and months of painful pivots."
Where to search (and where not to)
Cold-Googling "food co-packer near me" surfaces whoever spends the most on ads, not whoever runs your category well. Opaque RFQ portals match you with facilities that pay for placement. Start instead with sources that verify capability:
- Verified directories — capability audits on file, not self-reported claims.
- Operator referrals — founders in adjacent (non-competing) categories.
- Trade shows — good for meeting, bad for verifying. Always audit after.
How to vet a facility
Before any call, check the public record: FDA inspection history, warning letters, recall data, and business reputation. On Beltli this is rolled into a single Trust Rating across 20+ signals, but you can assemble it manually too. Then verify three things in conversation: minimum run size, changeover experience in your category, and references from brands at your stage.
A facility that hesitates to share references or an audit trail is answering your question, just not the way you hoped.
Building your shortlist
Three to five facilities is the right shortlist size. Score each on capability fit, capacity headroom, certifications, trust signals, and communication speed. Weight communication more than you think: the facility that replies in 24 hours during courtship is the one that picks up the phone when a run goes sideways.
Reaching out the right way
Skip the generic RFQ blast. Send each shortlisted facility a specific brief: category, current volume, 12-month forecast, target certifications, and packaging format. Specific briefs get specific answers, and they signal you're a serious operator, which moves you up the queue.
